Removed "Security Tools" with HijackThis

by stone280 / February 14, 2010 6:28 AM PST

My nephew brought his HP laptop to me three days after Norton expired, infected with 'Security Tools', telling me to buy it to protect his pc. I hadn't heard of it. but knew it was the problem when I looked at it. My cousin said buy Norton 360 to fix it, but 'Security Tools' wouldn't let it be installed. I either could not download or install any of the free software until I tried HijackThis. I had written down file numbers and the random numbers --HKLM\SOFTWARE\CLASSES\Wow6432Node\CLSID\{07B18EA9-A523-4961-B6BB-170DE4475CCA} and file#24040927 -- and used these to check the log. There were 3 separate files on the scan log with these names and/or numbers. It took 3 scans for me to get rid of them. After that, I was able to turn on WinDefender and install Norton. I don't know if I should have ventured that deep, as my skill level is slightly above newbie. But, it worked and I am very grateful for all the instructions found in various forums.
