Removal of Startup Programs

Jan 21, 2004 1:49AM PST

Hello All
When ever I load software it seems to add itself to my programs at startup. How I can I remove/stop these loading when I boot my system.

Also can I search for topics within the Cnet forums as I as sure many have asked this question before.

Thanks

when you do restart and the dialog box appears, check do not show this box again or whatever it says by the box at the lower lefthand side, or else it will appear every time you startup...

Hey Guys,
Please DO NOT leave your system in selective start up. This is a windows troubleshooting tool and you should always be in normal startup (hence the word "normal") selective startup takes these items that you uncheck out of the windows registry temporarily. If you then go to update your system, or the programs they belong to, they will not update. The next time you go to normal startup and boot, you will get errors. Msconfig is indeed a microsoft diagnostic tool.
In order to remove items from startup do this:

Right-click the Start button.
Choose Explore.
Open the Programs folder.
Create a new folder called Start NOT within Programs.
Open the Startup folder in Programs.
Drag the shortcut for the application from Startup to Startnot.
Now the application will not launch at start-up. To launch it manually, simply open the Startnot menu under Programs and click the application's menu item.
But doing anything in Msconfig is only temporary.

A lot of programs start at 'startup' and run in the background. Very few of these are in the startup folder. How do we stop these programs from starting at startup if, as you say, we should only use normal startup(which effectively means that the programs are not to be unchecked at msconfig )?

If an item is not listed, it means it's needed for a program to run properly and is added automatically when the program is installed whether you like or not. The item may not be listed in the startup or msconfig. I hate that about some programs. Big culprits for that are McAfee and Norton. And office programs. They put alot of junk in your startup. IF you are familiar with remarking items out; you can go to Start, run, and type Sysedit.
In the system.ini and win.ini you can put a semi-colon in front of load= lines and this keeps things from loading as well. Not advised though unless you are an expert. But doing anything in Msconfig is only temporary.

..

well, yes. Stopping programs from running at startup via msconfig is meant to be temporary. If you take a look at the list, you will notice that a lot of the programs are not neccessary, and it is still a good way to "increase performance" by unchecking the unnecessary programs. (IMHO)

Of course your list will differ from mine depending on how much software you have in your system and how much loads at startup. My pc loads only 12 programs at startup half of which belong to Norton, a 1/4 belong to the function of my monitor and a couple of office programs. And yes, you can "increase performance" by unchecking items in msconfig if your system lacks performance. My point is overtime the user might forget that their system is in "selective startup" and when they update their system/programs the programs belonging to the unchecked items will not be updated and the next time the user boots they will get errors.

Starter is a free startup manager that allows you to view and manage all the programs that are starting automatically whenever Windows boots. It lists all the hidden registry entries, as well as the common Startup Folder items. You can choose to safely disable selected entries, edit them or delete them altogether (if you know what you're doing). Expert users can even add their own entries.

Looks like a great program to have for those who need to manage startup items. I wonder whether using the program to stop a startup item will uncheck that same item at msconfig, or remove the item from the list, or delete the item as a program/application ?
