Remote login- Beyond the system requirements

Nov 30, 2014 7:02AM PST

So, I'm prepping for college and the classes I'm taking require for me to have a laptop and I'm on a budget for obvious reasons. I don't have a powerful laptop but I do have a powerful workstation. I know that in theory I can use a software like hamatchi or remote utilities to have the power of my workstation with my laptop but will I actually see a practical PREFORMACE difference if I use a remote login service with a relatively underpowered device to login from?

I should specify that I would need to be able to render 3d images. My desktop is more than capable and my laptop is not.

Thanks in advance

Sure.

See HAK5 demo ProxMux. I would be guessing what your needs are but there is no way to tap the desktop for say "gaming" but I could remotely tell the cluster to rev up and do some heavy computation, etc.

The video focuses on hardware but you can figure out how ProxMux plays into what you asked for.

That would work

That's a bit more complex way to go about it than I initially had in mind but that would more than meet my needs. Thanks, and if i'm using it for school I probably shouldn't be playing too many video games. . . although ask me that in a couple years and i'll be whistling a new tune.

For me, ProxMux would be the simpler answer.

Can you share a simpler system?

A file sharing service like hamatchi or remote utilities

File servers are a dime a dozen.

I think a virtual machine is a great idea, I had never considered it before. I have a few machines that I can include to it that would make a pretty killer settup. I've never made a virtual machine before and it sounds like a really fun project. Thanks Bob I think I'll try that.
