Finally used the right key words on google. This is the solution that I expect will work:
I got this e-mail from my father-in-law who just moved his computer into the room where my mother-in-law is now bedridden so he can always be there with her and still access the outside world via computer:
"With the pc in the front room it leaves the scanner isolated. I don't want to move it from the den. There just isn't any room and I don't want to find any where the hospital bed is. Is it possible to tie the pc and scanner where they are now thru the wireless method?"
There are bluetooth adapters via USB for the PC (out/in) but are there any adapters for non-bluetooth appliances on the other end (in/out)? If not, any other suggestions? As for going wired, USB isn't any good when extension corded over long lengths, right?
He really doesn't have any room in there, he was even considering buying a laptop and setting up a wireless lan, but decided to move the PC probably to save the cash.
By the way, this guy is 83 and on his third computer since 1998 (has learned to get a system powerful enough to fit his needs)and video conferences with his kids and grandkids all over the country, pretty cool!
Thanks for the help,
