General discussion

remote desktop and zone alarm seperate questions

Aug 8, 2005 11:14PM PDT

1 xpro notebook (SP2)
1 xpro Tower (SP2
gateway Linksys WRT54GS
Zone Alarm (freebie ver)
Both computers using ethernet 10/100
(1) I have to shutdown Zonealarm to have my local machines communicate and can't figure out how to get ZA to let them communicate.

(2) Want to see remote desktop on each computer; start menus etc but can't get the remote desktop function to work.
Please, need simplistically phrased instructions on accessing start menus etc for each machine remotely. It's an in-house setup with the router and I can access disks, folders etc but would like to have a whole remote desktop display on each machine for the other computer to start, enable programs remotely.
Thanks in Advance.

As I see it.....

ZA needs some tweaking.

1) I would try lowering the Security settings in the Trusted Zone until you gain access to the network shared folders. You may need to add PCs by IP address to the Trusted Zone as well.

2) RD will work through ZA provided you have set up RD properly and ZA is not blocking LAN traffic. RD has to be enabled on the XP Pro machines with passwords for the user account.

Where are you losing it?

so far router=security?
Aug 9, 2005 9:55PM PDT

Ok, since I am behind a router I lowered the security and after some fumbling I can use remote desktop successfully betwixt the net only I kinda feel insecure. Am I any kind of safe behind my router or is that a myth ???

Router, ZA, Windows Firewall etal....
Aug 10, 2005 11:22AM PDT

all provide layers of protection. I have found a combination of a router, one firewall, one AV and one antispyware program is sufficient to protect the average home PC.

Of course you could also wrap your PC in plastic, but that's overkill.

You pretty much listed the same precautions I have been running, and this morning for some reason my remote desktop is now FULLY sizable... Sometimes eh?

ipconfig in ZA and Remote Desktop Screen size
Aug 9, 2005 10:05PM PDT

I have zone alarm set now to take a range of addresses I made up and it's working. It was choking because I had told it to accept certain ip addresses but my router doesn't give the same address to the same computer depending on which gets turned on first and how many devices I have online.

Otherwise I'd like to be able to re-size the amount of my remote desktop screen, it's either full or full screen regardless of enlarge or restore buttons. It does minimize okay. It's really great not to have to keep the tons of stuff on my notebook any more Happy

remote desktop and terminal services WinXP
Aug 22, 2005 7:06PM PDT

Somehow I have lost my remote desktop connection. I get an error reading that there are no computers with terminal services available on my home network. I tried uninstalling and re-installing on both my machines and all shared drives folders and devices are visible but remote desktop won't work. It was fine and dandy after you helped me before. No spyware, worms or virus's found.
Thanks
