Answer
For years I've done this with servers. Today?
Aug 5, 2011 10:01AM PDT

Today I'm using a net book (228 bucks) and an external drive. Because we wanted it to not draw much power we put it on a Watt meter and the netbook runs from a low of 5 Watts to a high of 11 Watts the HDD is about the same.

Is 10 to 22 Watts acceptable?

I hadn't even considered...

I hadn't even considered power consumption. That isn't terribly important to me. Are you saying I need to get a whole separate computer to do this?

Have you found a cheaper way?

Remember I already did the research and found this to be about the cheapest. There are some that just want a drive but somewhere there has to be some computer to serve it up.
