Remote access

Sep 9, 2004 5:07AM PDT

Hi everyone,

I finally have my own laptop and I just got internet access at home. I was wondering how I would go about accessing files on my work computer from my laptop at home. I've been trying to read up on the 'Remote Desktop' in the Windows XP help files, but it's just confusing. Any advice would be much appreciated!

Cheers,
Toby

Our offices drop such incoming connects. Here's why it doesn't work.

When you try to connect to your work machine, it's likely you typed in 192.168.1.112 and it failed since that's not a valid IP for the internet. The office uses an NAT capable ROUTER to share the internet IP and the IT staff would have to make an entry in the router for you to reach in and connect to your PC.

Bottomline? You get to talk to the IT.

Do I need Windows Professional on my work computer to use remote access? Is there another way to share or synchronize files between my work and home computers?

"Do I need Windows Professional on my work computer to use remote access?"

No, but the issue I noted will cause any solution to fail. You need your IT to supply support.

I use an USB memory key. I sync with that at office, then home, then office....

is there a synchronization program, or do you just drag & drop the files you use?

I found sync programs to work sporadically, so I just copy. My Palm however syncs fine.

Copy works for me since the files are my projects.
