General discussion

'Tariff wars are easy to win'?
Looks like they're not even easy to fight.
'China backs down; Trump reacts'.

BTW unlike some here, I'm not even looking at the pro- or anti-Trump aspect. (Beyond his foolish, naïve and false statement at the outset.)
What the Chinese are doing is negotiating in deliberate bad faith. Not the first time in their or world history. (My favorite version is King Albert the Great vs. the Danes.)
In their opinion they have the upper hand over the US, hence their behavior.

Bottom line: Not good for anyone.

Perhaps China also knows how to play the game.

We now wait to see how the game ends.

However it ends I suspect the Don will spin it.

U.S. Fed's Bostic warns U.S. consumers may feel hit on China tariff boost

Escalating tariffs on Chinese goods could push U.S. businesses to pass on these higher costs to consumers, said Atlanta Fed President Raphael Bostic, hours before a deadline set by President Donald Trump to raise them to 25 per cent from 10 per cent on US$200 billion of products.

Give the taxpayer a "tax break"...THEN increase tariffs/cost of goods for the 'taxpayer".

Give with one hand, take away with the other?

Tariffs
May 9, 2019 1:49PM PDT

Perhaps no one has explained to the Don whose's picking up the tab for this tariff spat.

Tax cut.
I doubt the folks who got the biggest slice of that pie are much concerned about the cost of a TV going up.

As long as the economy stays strong the Don has political cover.

If it starts moving down the Don will be looking for someone to blame....think the Fed.

The most affected as the most declining of things we buy. On the flip side, medical costs (care, treatment, drugs) have skyrocketed.

Here's the one with the TVs followed with another with medical.

There are memes about folk that have no memory or idea what products and services cost.

There's another reason for this.

This can reduce the chances that the Federal Reserve will increase interest rates.
For each 1/4 point it's estimated that it costs Trump 1 million USD per year.
