remember LaserDisk?

Hi Def DVDs remind me of the LaserDisk. It had beautiful pictures, exquisite hardware, and three problems: it was expensive, there was limited content, and few people could afford TVs or projectors capable of displaying the high quality images. If broadband acceptance in the home continues to grow and delivery speeds keep pace, the whole matter may be academic. Why buy content in a format that may become obsolete prematurely when you can stream that content any time you want to see it? Yes, some will still want to collect DVDs, just as people still collect LPs. But for the average viewer, streaming video on demand is more convenient, maybe cheaper in the long run.
