Remember 3Dfx?

Jul 14, 2009 5:09PM PDT

I was browsing some old gaming titles at a local Half Price Books store, and came across a couple of old...no...ancient gaming titles I missed back when they were in their prime. Considering the el-cheapo prices, I thought it would be cool to finally experience them...until I happened to check out the system requirements.

Suffice to say that it's been a LONG time since I or anyone else that I know has had a Voodoo-compatible video card in ANY of its generation iterations. Ignoring (for now) the faster CPUs we have these days, does anyone know if there any driver hacks that might allow these old 3Dfx games to run with a current-day vid card?

Probably not

Probably not anything out there. You can try running the games, and maybe they have some kind of fallback mode when they don't find a 3dfx chip... There's also a chance if you have an nVidia card, they folded some of the extensions into their cards when they acquired the company some years ago.

Under 50 percent chance.

I just went through our games collection and freecycle'd out such things.

What did I do? I gifted these titles so the value is near zero since it's unlikely to get them to run on today's gear.

Do not buy such things for more a few pennies.

Try XP and using the compatibility mode
Jul 30, 2009 10:02AM PDT

Because Vista isnt backwards compatibility my partner who has really old games runs them through XP but uses the compatibilty mode change and makes them think they are running on 98.
He has a dual boot system with the main OS (preloaded) and XP.

That's not true

That's not true. Vista IS backwards compatible, and it has a compatibility mode just like XP got in SP2 and Win2K got in SP4.

3DFX

I do still like the 3DFX model. There was a big differance in graphics. But since NVIDA desided to buy them out and shut down there operation, things have never been the same for me. With todays technology, I could imagine the great visuals that could happen today. At least I still have a Monster 3DFX card. And maybe, some day, we'll see it come back.

Glide Wrapper
Aug 1, 2009 7:28AM PDT

There used to be some software that you could run to enable 3Dfx stuff called a Glide-wrapper. Glide(2,3) was 3Dfx's API. Just Google glide-wrapper, I am sure you can find out more.

I remember getting my 1st 3Dfx card, a Creative Banshee....those were the days....Glide and Unreal Happy
