General discussion

Remaining forum issues?

Nov 14, 2006 5:49AM PST

The original thread has become quite long making it difficult to navigate, especially with resolved and duplicated issues posted. Thus, I have created this one to keep tabs on what issues still remain after the latest patch releases. Please look through this thread and try not to duplicate issues already posted.

John, this is my MAJOR annoyance...
Nov 15, 2006 2:53AM PST

Happens here 100% of the time. Sad

Definitely MAJOR and to the point . .
Nov 21, 2006 11:01PM PST

I may be joining Coryphaeus in abandoning these forums altogether if things don't get quickly.

I travel about a million miles a day doing genealogy searches and the CNET forums are about the worse I've ever seen.

Going to work on getting those forum left navs changed
Nov 27, 2006 8:38AM PST

to a fixed position menu rather than the annoying opening and closing of them.

Thanks for the feedback guys!

THANK YOU!!!
Nov 29, 2006 4:00AM PST

There's still a short hang when the universal login loads, but now that the javascript for expandability of the navigation menu has been removed the forums load quickly once again and without having to 'refresh' when doing so.

Many thanks!

Oh yes Lee... you did it!
Nov 29, 2006 6:15AM PST

I noticed that right off this afternoon. That has been one of my major annoyances. Thanks! Grin

Hope this is not a double post as somehow I just lost one. Sad

MAJOR: Duplicates, locked threads, etc error messages?
Nov 14, 2006 5:52AM PST

1.) If you are in the middle of posting a reply and a thread is locked when you click the Submit button the page is simply refreshed?you are not notified that the thread has been locked and that posting has been disabled.

2.) If you go to post a message with a duplicate subject or body the bold red text is displayed but the forum software ?forgets? where you were (You are suddenly in the forum called ?Forum?), making it impossible to Preview or Submit your post.

3.) Right now the forum software is not always detecting top posts as being duplicates of each other but it?s batting a hundred when it comes to replies.

4.) If you click on a link or type in a URL to a post that has been deleted you are taken to the Cnet member sign up/login page even though you are logged in. It should display the appropriate error message as it used to.

Functionality: No ?Next unread Post? links?
Nov 14, 2006 5:52AM PST

That is proving very troublesome when navigating long threads, particularly those that span multiple pages. The functionality needs to be added in the new forums.

We are going to bring this functionality back...

I promise! However it will take some time...

Functionality: URL Manipulation?
Nov 14, 2006 5:53AM PST

1.) The URL can be manipulated such that you can circumvent the depth limit, producing undesirable rendering in Threaded view.

2.) If you add &viewMode=flat (or tree or threaded) at the end of a URL to a post anyone who clicks it will have their Forum View preferences changed to that view until they reset their preference.

Functionality: delay in submitting Mod alerts?
Nov 14, 2006 5:53AM PST

After submitting a mod alert there is a long delay. The e-mail has already been sent, but the page sits there waiting as if it has not been. It does eventually state that the alert has been submitted, but it?s another javascript problem.

Submitting this to the engineers to look into.

Thanks John!

Much better...
Dec 7, 2006 3:10AM PST

There still seems to be a slight delay, making it take longer to submit a mod alert than it does to submit a post, but there has been a significant improvement.

Functionality: Limit on link lengths?
Nov 14, 2006 5:53AM PST

The average length of support links from Symantec, Microsoft, etc is 110 characters, and that?s not counting the formatting code or the title of the link, if the member uses that option. Thus, I feel the filter should be changed from 150 characters to 200 characters, giving us a little buffer room. (I?ve already hit the wall once.)

Functionality: Back to forum link at bottom?
Nov 14, 2006 5:54AM PST

There should be a ?Back to forum? link at the bottom for convenience as well, not just the top.

I hate to be picky, but...
Nov 15, 2006 7:24AM PST

At the top the "Back to _______ forum" has the green arrow for easy spotting and is right justified on the same line as "Total posts: 5 (Showing page 1 of 1)"...could the same be done at the bottom?

Functionality: Mark all unread does not hide?
Nov 14, 2006 5:54AM PST

Previously if all threads/posts in a forum were marked as read the ?Mark all posts read? link would be hidden to indicate it was successful, but that?s no longer the case.
