This is the MS Office Forum, and your problem belongs in the Windows 98 forum. So please post it there.
All I want to remark at the moment: on the face of it, it seems like you need another router (or maybe another network card), not a fresh OS. You might want to explain in your new post what made you think Zonealarm was the cause and what you did to ascertain that.
And it seems that either your procedure to load the driver for the videocard is wrong, or you use the wrong diskette, or the file on the diskette is damaged. So please explain how you do it, and what's on the diskette.
See you in the Win 98 forum!

I thought ZoneAlarm may have caused a problem so that I was unable to connect to the internet, but having tried every solution I could think of I reformatted the disk and reloaded Win98 SE.
I still can't connect and now Windows doesn't recognise that a modem is installed, which should not be a major problem because I normally use a router on a broadband connection. However when I ping the router it fails or some packets are lost; I have tried rebooting the router. The network card's LED is alight and Windows reports that it is working properly
Also Windows has automatically loaded a generic driver for the monitor but I need to change it to one I have on a disk but Windows doesn't recognise it.
Something awful seems to have happened - am I doomed or is there a solution?
Thanks for any advice
