General discussion

reliability of different brands of routers

Sep 21, 2004 6:48PM PDT

Hi all, have a question about the recommendations of those of you that have a lot of experience with routers, I am new to the router racket. I bought a D-link router and hooked it up, and twice it has vapor locked on me and had to be rebooted. Luckily, I was home both times, and was able to reboot. But I want rock solid reliability, you're not always there to reboot a router. So, I bought a Linksys BEFSX41 wired router and hooked it up. Same thing has already happened with it, on the first day I have had it. So, I have a few questions I hope to get input on.

What do you consider the most reliable router brand? Is it common for the D-link router to freeze up like this? How about the Linksys, is it common for it to freeze up like this? If so, is Netgear or any other brand of router more reliable? Or, is it a problem you just have to learn to live with? And finally, how likely is it that this problem isn't the router at all? More likely to be the router, or the ISP? Thanks all. Sincerely, Steve

This is not an uncommon problem. But is the FIRMWARE in the units the latest from their makers?

Also, lockups are not uncommon with power dips so you can't complain unless you put it on some UPS. Besides the UPS, I find it best to put the unit where it can be "cool"? That is, not buried under other equipment.

I have a D-link complete system. Modem, router, PCI NICs (3), and one wireless NIC for the laptop. I've had zero problems, rock solid as you say. But I also check the D-link site about once a month for firmware updates. And I run behind a UPS.

I could be a salesman for D-link because of my great service from the equipment and their Help and FAQ sites when I invariably screw something up. The emphasis on I.

I've read more complaints from other brands such as MS and Linksys than D-link.

If you have the same problem with two different brands, I'd look at my system for problems. Can you give us more information on what you mean by "vapor lock"?

Well the term "vapor lock" kind of means when something locks up on you, or gets all f--ked up. I plugged the router into my UPS and I'm going to see if this doesn't solve the problem of lockups. At times our power here isn't smooth so that could be it. Now just have to fix the the other problem with not being able to remote access into my computer behind the Dlink router from the Internet while traveling, which I posted about in another message.
