I have owned sever Cowon players. I used all of them on the job where the work was very physical, and since they all lasted for a decent length of time (one actually still works after six years), I think the reliability issue is a given. But Cowon players have a great benefit, the sound. All of the ones I've owned were able to push a full sized set of headphones louder than one would feel comfortable listening to them, while maintaining a very low level of distortion. You won't find an IPod that can accomplish this well, nor would any other player I've owned.
They're a little more expensive. but if you're an audiophile they are worth it.
