Relational Database Software Recommendations?

Feb 15, 2009 5:03AM PST

I have a few databases set up on my Mac using mySQL. I'd like to create a front end with form windows, maybe some printable reports, etc., nothing too complicated. Like Access but for the Mac. I've tried NeoOffice Base and it's way too buggy. My stuff isn't important enough to warrant shelling out $300 for FileMaker Pro. Is there anything else out there worth looking at?

FileMaker Pro but you beat me to it.

Take a look at Bento, same company, and see if it will fulfill your needs

Bento was too lightweight, unfortunately

It's not a true relational database app despite its being promoted as a database. I downloaded the trial and played with it a bit but it just wasn't intended for the types of things I'm doing. For example, you can use it to create a DVD library but you can't cross-reference by film genre, director, etc.

I've written applications that have MySQL as the DB.

The bugs aren't with my SQL

They are in NeoOffice, and it doesn't matter whether the database tables are in NeoOffice itself or linked to mySQL tables. Issues like dropdown lists that only populate sometimes, don't retain the selections you make, things of that nature. I have reported them, got some initial feedback but no answers. I haven't followed up to see whether they have closed the issues I reported.

For mySQL database admin I've been using Sequel Pro. I've also used Navicat which I liked a lot and will buy as soon as I am able to. Unfortunately neither app is intended for building front ends, which is what I'm looking to do.

AFAIK...

The only programming language I know is C#, which is Windows only. I was hoping for something out of the box but maybe there just isn't anything (other than FileMaker).

Not as far as 'user' to 'programmer.'

I suggest you look at Apple's programming tools one more time.

Relational databases for Mac

Does anyone remember "Interlace" which eventually became Reflex Plus for the Mac?
I would like to find something similar to use today. I do not need a business type program but only something for my own use. I cannot help thinking in relational database terms. However I seem to find programs that only offer repeating field. I would appreciate some suggestions
