Reinstalling Windows XP

Nov 25, 2003 11:19PM PST

I have acquired a used Compaq computer with licensed software, including Windows XP. I want to keep my better motherboard and cpu, use the "new" larger hard drive(it has been formatted), and basically take the best from both to make a nice computer. I have never used Windows XP and am worried if it will allow me to do this. I seem to recall that you have to register XP for it to be activated and if I make these changes, it will show up as a different computer. The software I have is, "Compaq Operating System CD","Compaq Restore Plus", and 2 "Restore Supplemental Software" cd's. Since I will be changing the mb and cpu, will this Compaq software install on a now 'generic' computer? Thanks for the help - Phill

"The software I have is, "Compaq Operating System CD","Compaq Restore Plus", and 2 "Restore Supplemental Software" cd's."

As such these Restore CDs can only be used on that Compaq Make/Model with the same Motherboard & CPU.

"Since I will be changing the mb and cpu, will this Compaq software install on a now 'generic' computer?"

In this case you can't use the Compaq Restore CDs to reinstall XP.

Also check that the new motherboard will fit the Compaq case & power supply unit before you purchase these parts.

Thanks - I guess I'll have to do less changing out of parts then. Phill

My expeience with Compaq Restore CDs is that everything has to be the same, HD size, RAM, etc.
