reinstalled windows xp, now no internet :(

May 31, 2005 4:16AM PDT

Well, I was having some bugs on my computer and I did some wierd things with my computer, but it appears I have completed a clean reinstallation of windows XP. Unfortunatly, I now cannot access the internet with my Adelphia motorolla surfboard cable modem. I normally have this modem connected to a router, so I know the modem is working since i have internet access through my current location. However, on my computer I get no internet access. I called adelphia and went through the internet wizard and set it to LAN, but it still didnt work. I later tried directly connecting the cable modem to my computer and I still got a message saying it couldn't connect. The adelphia guy said no software is needed, so I have no idea even where to start to get my connnection working.

let me know what I could do, thanks.

The most common cause?

Someone installs Windows but is not aware of what drivers are needed for their machine. It's not automatic. There is no button you press and the drivers get installed.

Nothing has improved in this area for over 10 years.

drivers

I probably shouldn't have reinstalled before knowing these things, but I'm stuck now. Is there any way I can find which drivers I need?

The short list.

Drivers for:

Motherboard.
Video.
Audio.
Network Card.
Modem.

That usually covers it. Sometimes people just need this list.

Check your Windows Firewall

This feature gets turned on automatically when first running XP. This was a big problem at my work when we all got new cpu's. No one could get onto the internet until I realized that the firewalls were turned on. Check it in control panel.
