Question

registry file format

May 2, 2016 2:39PM PDT

Until 10 days ago, opening a .jpg was just a click away. Now I get a message stating, the system has attempted to load or restore a file into the registry, but the specified file is not in a registry file format.
I can right click & choose a program to open it but why is it not opening the file as before ?

some other viewer. Was there some other viewer that is above yours when you right-click to choose? I am having a similar issue with my audio player, which is very annoying.

I can open them by r. clk'g & choosing which program to use. I was told it might be a file association issue & will ask how that is done. Thanks for your comment.

Well, that's a deep issue.

For example, some folk sent out JPG files that were indeed a .reg file and blammo. Other tricksters do this with .exe and more.

So, take a deeper look at your JPG file name. Is it really a .jpg?

More at http://www.dailytech.com/Steam+Chat+is+Being+Overrun+by+WormLike+Trojans+Latest+is+WTF+Malware/article37041.htm and dozens if not hundreds of web pages about this.

Another exploit is to change them all to .jpg.reg files to carry out the exploit.

Yes, your machine sounds infected at this point. Try scanning with the tools Grif noted at http://www.cnet.com/forums/discussions/how-to-remove-pup-option-603542/#post-f742c795-5881-433b-a29b-6d758efe5cd3
