Who makes it?

"Registry Cleaner" is a very popular name since that is also the category it falls into...registry cleaners. Thus, it's important to know who the author of the program is for identification purposes. (Alternatively, the download link.)

Until then I can't compare it to Registry Mechanic, but I can comment on the latter. It is one of the most powerful and thorough registry cleaners available, and widely popular. My only discrepancy is that it returned a lot of false-positives in my tests, suggesting the deletion of registry entries crucial to the operation of Microsoft Encarta, among other things. Thus, I only recommend it for those who know what they're doing so they can look over when it finds and deselect anything that shouldn't be deleted.

Hope this helps,
John

Registry cleaner

I have been all over the web trying to compare registry cleaners, and it seems that every website has five top picks that are not in common with any other website. They all seem to have names that are similar: like RegistryFix and Registry Fixer. Where can I find out which one is the highest rated for a beginner? I know that I can mess up the registry big time if I'm not careful, so I don't think that I want Registry Mechanic if it gives false positives. I'm running a machine with ME and have been getting the "blue screen of death" for weeks now. I've got to fix it pronto! Thank you for any feedback.

Options...

The one I recommend is RegCleaner, which is free from TweakNow. It is not nearly as powerful/thorough as Registry Mechanic, but I've used it for over a year now on several machines and have never had a false positive. (It tells you which are completely safe, which should be safe, and which ones it's not sure of, which truly helps.) Running others after it still produced some hits, but RegCleaner caught most of them and best of all did it safely. It's free and very easy to use, so I'd highly recommend giving it a shot. (Note: The professional version isn't much better than the free version, so don't spend the money on the 'upgrade.')

Since you're running Windows ME, my #2 favorite, RegScrubXP from Lexun, doesn't apply. (It's for Windows 2000/XP only.)

For other options, click here for the list from Cnet's download.com. You can sort it by rating from the Cnet editors or the average user along the top, and narrow it down further by using the filter at the bottom.

Now, while registry cleaners do help, their success in speeding up or fixing a computer is minimal. You can try cleaning up your registry, but I suspect the BSOD issue will remain, as it's likely caused by another issue. If you want, share the details (system specs, recent changes, when it happens, what the BSOD message says, etc) and we should be able to narrow the field to figure out what the cause is, then fix it.

Hope this helps and let us know.

Hi Debbie
Mar 26, 2006 5:49AM PST

...i know that visiting a lot of websites to look for an app is difficult & it's more confusing than useful .
Personally , i'd suggest to read users reviews on Download.com : i think it could be much more helpful .
Anyway if you're looking for an excellent program(also easy to use for beginners) , take a look at this :

http://www.download.com/WinASO-Registry-Optimizer/3000-2094_4-10477738.html

Despite it's easy to use(just one click !) , it has many features that requires a little more experience , so you can surely perform one-click scan in main window by yourself but ask someone for other features if you're not sure what to do exactly (post a message , i'll be glad to help) .
Run it after installing or removing or deleting something , it will delete most of registry keys unnecessary .
However it won't solve all your problems , so do not think that this could be enough to be safe .
Good luck

DANGER!

Sorry but this tool is not free from danger. We only need to look in our forums to find where members have lost the entire OS over this and other titles.

There's a lesson here.

Always backup the registry before making changes
Jun 9, 2008 11:41AM PDT

Registry programs make the users back up their registry before making any changes to it. If the changes create a problem they can restore the PC back to the way it was.

With my support work involving a registry program usually the people with problems are the ones that have not done the backup -and then also have just checked fix all without even browsing the suggested corrections.
