REGEDIT Help

Jun 11, 2005 8:11AM PDT

Hi all,

Using XP PRO SP2, all fixes applied. I can not get to REGEDIT in what I call the usual way. Which is START-RUN-type in REGEDIT & click OK. I momentarily see a DOS like black screen, it disappears & nothing happens. If I search REGEDIT.EXE and click on it, registry editor works, any idea why?

Thanks,
Steve

That sounds like minor spyware or other damage.
Jun 11, 2005 8:15AM PDT

Some trojans drop in a fake regedit.com or .exe that will run before the real one.

Search your system for REGEDIT*.* and tell the forum what you find. Also, what are you using for spyware and other detection, removal and protection.

REGEDIT reply
Jun 11, 2005 8:44AM PDT

Hi Robert,

Thanks for the quick response, I run SPYBOT S&D 1.4, I run Ad-AWARE professional 1.06RC1, I run SPYWARE Blaster V3.4, I run Ewido Security Suite 3.0, I use Norton A/V 2005, all the above programs are up to date maint. wise.

As for the search I found the following for a REGEDIT*.*:
REGEDIT C:\I386
REGEDIT c:\windows

Both are 143KB applications There are help files but no other executables.

Thanks,
Steve

Now check your PATH.
Jun 11, 2005 9:28AM PDT

Open a command window (start, run, CMD) and type path, press enter and share the result.

That won't work-Update
Jun 12, 2005 2:29AM PDT

Hi again,

I did a search & found CMD in C:\I386, when I clicked to open it I got a DOS screen & typed PATH in there & received the following:

Path=C:\windows\system32;C:\windows;C:\windows\system32\wbem;C:\programfiles\ATI Technologies\ATI Control Panel;C:\progra~1\Sonics~1\;C:\Program Files\Executive Software\diskeeper\

Hope that helps more

Thanks again,
Steve

Did I find it?
Jun 12, 2005 5:10AM PDT

Bob,

If I found it, how do I fix it? What about they system32 folder under windows (not there), should that be there?

Thanks,
Steve

Change the path to where your .exes are.
Jun 12, 2005 5:28AM PDT

I do not access to your system, but if the machine has a path to system32 and you don't have such, then why shoud such things work from the command line?

SYSTEM32 Folder Missing I think?
Jun 12, 2005 9:34AM PDT

Hi Bob & ALL,

I have a question about changing the path, I have a friend who ALSO has a DELL computer configured with Windows XP PRO SP 2, his PATH is the same as mine (as listed earlier in this thread) & has no problem. He also has a SYSTEM32 folder under Windows directory (I do not), you said that my ''Path was wrong''? Is that correct? You never explained how to correct a bad path or what is the NORMAL path under windows XP PRO (maybe there is NOT a normal & that's why U responded so?) I've searched Google to try to figure this out with little help. I know this is NOT the newbies site but I guess I need a little more direction.

Q1 Should SYSTEM32 Folder exist under Windows directory?

Q2 If it should how can I get that folder restored? BTW I tried system restore back 2 months ago, it said no system files changed??

Q3 If it should not exist (system32 folder), how do I change my PATH to include system files? They seem to be in directory I386.

I'm really snowed here & any help will be greatly appreciated

Thanks all,

Steve

One of the problems of these forums ...
Jun 12, 2005 11:29AM PDT

Is I can't know a person's skill level. The PATH is a 2 decade old DOS concept so it's widely taught in books, classes and web sites.

In a nutshell, entry level users could edit the path to add where these commands are. It's OK to reveal that you've never heard of PATH or what it means.

Here's a tutorial -> http://www.melbpc.org.au/pcupdate/2207/2207article9.htm

It's NOT a problem
Jun 12, 2005 12:52PM PDT

Robert,

You are 100% correct that it's impossible for you to know the skill levels of every person OR any person on this site. You point out that PATH's are decades OLD DOS things, that assumes as a window's XP PRO or a former Window's 95/98/98SE edition person that somehow I am fully functional in DOS commands. I will admit I am not. My admiting I don't understand DOS does not diminish my REGARD for your ongoing support, when U give a support answer, I'll try to figure it out, I don't want to bogg U down answering lame questions, I'll only ask when I'm not sure where else to look...

Hope that helps,
Steve

Please keep asking.

I'm more of a guide at times to find what you may need to know. In my last post I decided to lay bare the skill level issue to get that up on the table and out of the way.

You are very close to fixing this. Very very close.

could it be
Jun 12, 2005 4:46AM PDT

a 64 bit reason? That there is no system32 folder? lol

- Collapse -
answer is my other 64 bits have a system32 folder
Jun 12, 2005 4:50AM PDT

This one doesn't, hmmm.

Could it be--YES
Jun 12, 2005 4:54AM PDT

Skippy,

I think you are onto the problem. I have no SYSTEM32 folder under windows either suddenly. Anyone know how that could happen? Anyone know how to get it back? I haven't done anything with 64BIT that I know of.

I guess that's why when I do a search I only find it under the C:\I386 folder & not under windows?

Thanks for any help,
Steve

see if you have a lastgood folder?
Jun 12, 2005 5:10AM PDT

I did, when i tried to cut and paste my system32 out of it it went in to my pc-cillin folder. I cut and paste again and its completely gone. no system32 in search at all. now I can't find it. Its defineltly a bug! skip

- Collapse -
no bug?
Jun 12, 2005 5:45AM PDT

the lastgood folder is created when you select last good start up. I had lightning the other night and a power surge shut this pc down only. It must of happen then. If you have system32 in the lastgood folder and live with it. I'm not sure but, I don't think its a bug.

system32 folder and regedit problem
Jun 12, 2005 5:43AM PDT

Is your system32 still not showing? Go to control panel, folder options. Select show hidden folders. This should take care of the system32 folder's ability to be seen.

2nd question. Did you resolve your inability to type in regedit in the run window and have it function? I had the same problem. A virus/worm got to about 6 of my system .exe files and changed them to .com. What I did, just by trial and error, was change the name of the .com file, for example: regedit1.com...then it wouldn't read it and the dos window would not appear. That is provide you still have your .exe files in your system32 folder. Cause then when you type in regedit in your run window, the system will not ''see'' the .com 1st, and read the .exe file. Hope this helps.

System32 File Still not there
Jun 12, 2005 6:18AM PDT

Hi,

First question:I did as you suggested, went to control panel & under folder options said show all files and folders. Still no system32 folder under Windows directory. There is one under the I386 directory

Second Question: I do see a REGEDIT.EXE in the windows directory, so nothing changed it to a .COM extension. Robert said I am using the wrong path, so I'm currently investigating how to change that. I still have the original problem if I do START-RUN-REGEDIT I get the black DOS screen, then it diappears, so when I find out how to change my Path I'll see if that fixes it!

Thanks for the help,
Steve
PS I just upgraded my Norton A/V definitions to todays file (June 12th), last file I had was June 8th, nothing on full system scan

allow hidden files and system folders!!!!!!
Jun 18, 2005 4:59PM PDT

I'd certainly run a spyware scan and check for viruses. Try allowing hidden and system folders. In Windows Explorer (not internet), check ''show hidden files, and uncheck hide system files''. I personally feel you have a (had) virus or some nasty spyware.

Also, you might find some useful info at http://www.virusspy.com along with some useful software (free).

mine either
Jun 12, 2005 6:55AM PDT

1st, sys32 isn't a hidden file. 2nd, I was finding it with windows search, now its completely gone. I deleted the firstgood folder and it went back into my pc-cilloin folder in program files. 3rd- after inspecting it it had hardly any of the file it should have in it. so I deleted that. 4th- I tried to cut and paste the sys32 from and identicle, system and, it said it already existed. So something is hidding it. I can type the regedit path and it works. Because its in the windows folder not sys32 folder. just type in run:
C:\windows\regedit.exe and, it should popup.
I got to figure this out!!!!

System32
Jun 21, 2005 9:53AM PDT

I don't have system32 folder either. It used to be there before because i used it but now it's not. It's not a hidden folder or anything. You can access it by simply going to the windows folder then adding "/System32" after the path. But i can't use the programs in it. There's task manager in it which i use a lot and now i can't use it, as well as regedit.
