Question

Regarding an error that always pops up.. regarding usb error

I currently have a laptop with windows 10 home 64 bit

Started about 2 months ago whenever I start the computer a message pops up in window and it says

"The last usb device you connected to this computer malfunctioned and windows doesn't recognize it "

Recommendation - Try reconnecting the device. If windows still does not recognize, your device may not be working properly"

Any help please it drives me nuts

I've seen that

The message by itself didn't tell me much. For me the last time it was a failed USB cable. But it can be something else. The message does not tell you what piece it is.

So you know to try other cables and devices and hope it's not the PC.

Troubleshoot the Error

In reply to: Regarding an error that always pops up.. regarding usb error

The simplest method troubleshooting this error message may be to shutdown the computer, unplug all USB devices including mouse and keyboard. If the mouse is wireless unplug the little USB receiver thingy, too.
Then turn the computer on again and wait for it to boot up. If it stops booting up because the keyboard is unplugged shut it down again and plug in the keyboard and try again. Anyway, once the computer has booted up completely, Check if the error message pops up even when NO USB devices are connected. Obviously, you shouldn't get an error message, but if you do then try using System Restore to roll back Windows to an earlier time before the error messages began.
Assuming the error message did not occur, plug in one USB device and wait for it to be recognized and check that the device works OK. Then restart the computer and see if the error message pops up. If all is well go ahead and plug in one more USB device, wait and confirm it's working then restart the computer. Continue this process item by item. If the error message pops up after one of the restarts then the last device you plugged in is probably causing the problem. Substitute a different device of the same type and try again.

Thanks for all your answers

Much appreciated..

I did everything that you guys have said and still nothing worked, I did not upgrade from another lower windows so I knew it wasn't the problem. I have a mouse with usb and also I plug in my go pro every few days so I know it had to be either those two or as the first poster said my laptop..

In the end I went to system Notifcations and turned off banner/sounds and so far I have not seen the error come back so far I think I have swept it under the rug for now.. just hoping when I do some filming with go pro and plug in it wont come back ..

will keep you all informed when I get some filming done

Thanks for your amazing replies.

I don't have an answer for you but...

In reply to: Regarding an error that always pops up.. regarding usb error

I've has a couple of anomalies That may or may not be relevant.

I have an Asus Laptop with three USB3 ports and a legacy 2.0 port. I use a Bluetooth external mouse on it, through a USB BT 4.0 adaptor (the laptop doesn't have BT built in). That USB BT adaptor will not run in any of the USB 3 ports but is perfect in the USB 2. No idea why!

When I did the Win10 Anniversary edition update to Win10 for a relative, it hung on the "spinning dots" at 75%. Turned out to be the USB wireless adaptor she uses for an external mouse. Unplugged it and the update ran to completion successfully (and subjectively a bit faster). When I plugged the USB adaptor back in, it wasn't recognised. A check on Device Manager showed the USB Hub to have an outstanding error. I disabled it and re-enabled it and the mouse is working fine. My next step would have been to uninstall the USB hubs and let Win10 re-install them but that wasn't necessary.

If both your mouse and GoPro are actually working, it could be a older temporary error just hanging around. Check Device Manager and I assume you've tried other ports?

Work-around?

If you hibernate in stead of shut down probably you won't see this message when booting. Might help to be driven nuts less often.
