Red Alert: The D, C, and B variants of Netsky, alo ng with Bagle.C and Bagle.E are causing a worldwide epidemic - 03/02/04

Mar 2, 2004 8:47AM PST

MADRID, March, 2, 2004 - The current wave of viruses which includes the C, D
and E variants of Nestky, as well as the Bagle.C and Bagle.E worms, has
reached epidemic proportions worldwide. They are all spreading at an
alarming rate and causing an increasing number of incidents around the
globe. According the data collated by PandaLabs, there are now millions of
infected e-mails in circulation.

This current epidemic is particularly worrying for companies, as all the
viruses propagate aggressively, meaning that they can rapidly collapse
corporate networks. At present some ninety-five percent of infected
computers belong to companies.

This doesn't mean however that home computers users can drop their guard, as
with the number of infected mails in circulation and the likelihood of more
appearing (PandaLabs has just detected the new Bagle.I), there is a strong
chance that their computers could be attacked at any time.

Netsky.D is proving -up until now- to be the most dangerous of all of them.
In less than 24 hours it has become the virus most frequently detected by
Panda ActiveScan, and this trend is increasing.

According to Luis Corrons, head of PandaLabs, "The idea that an epidemic is
caused by a single virus is clearly needs reconsidering. Virus creators are
aware of the effectiveness of launching waves of malicious code and the
increased probability of infection, and so we can expect to see more of
these tactics in the future."

To stem the tide of this infection, Panda Software has released its free
PQRemove utility which detects and eliminates Netsky.D from infected
computers. This application also restores any changes this new worm has made
to the system configuration.

This tool can be downloaded free of charge from
