Crashed? Well, that still leaves a lot to discover why. I suggest if you have access to another PC, d/l Hiren's help disc .ISO file, burn to disc and boot from it. If you can do that and even run some basic tests, it suggests at a low level it isn't crapping out. Otherwise, if it fails to load any pgms for testing or refuses to remain up and running, you have a weak or falter h/w item. What that is is still open to find out. If booting up and all works and remains -ON throughout testing, etc. and for long time, just up and running, then maybe it's some s/w glitch. the other side of s/w is possible malware at work here. Recent rootkit baddies are making the rounds, so running any self-bootable AV disc or flash drive would help scan these. Your results are just to vague for now and still needs more testing. If you can boot from OS disc, then try a "repair mode" and see if that helps. Also, 3-XP discs, was one just the OS and others drivers, apps, etc???
What i do is run KILDISK or DBAN disc wiper to totally clean a HD. Then run the bootable recovery/restore or OS discs and reload them then. If it works, you may have had a clinging OS portion or weak HD area that can be corrected -OR- will later re-appear but for now, works. It's important at times to restart from scratch to remove all that was before in order to have a clean slate.
FYI- Since, you're running XP and if this was the original OS that came with the PC, consider a possible "bad caps" failure due to wear&tear(old age). Weak caps and such cause all sorts of errors or flaky operation. Google for examples of "bad caps", http://www.badcaps.net should show easily the issue.
