Every program that works with speakers ON, should work with the speakers OFF also. That's because the PC doesn't know the power state of the speaker.

I used Audacity.

iv tried audacity/freecord and mp3mymp3 all need the speakers on to record (apart from freecord that just caused major crashes on my laptop so i dont know) i tried turning the speakers off and all i got was a blank recording which was a shame as audacity looked very impressive .

Audacity has a few settings.

I find some folk that pass it up a bit too quickly without research about the issue you noted. Check out the audacity forums about how to select the audio source and other things.

the only info/advice i can find is on how to set it up so it records what comes out of the speakers this seems to include any noises made by other programes etc

I meant the power button on the (amplified) speakers. Audacity can't see if that is on or off.

But routing the sound to a headphone you don't listen to has nearly the same effect.

the specific show i want to record is on at 10am until 2pm and i work nights and my lap top is in my room so other ppl can use the desktop during the day so i need a program that doesnt require the sound being on in any way
