Sounds like a trip to a shop is needed.

If this fails and it looks as if you are doing the right things, find a shop that will help you make it work or will help you find a new solution.

Mic input NOT stereo

Many laptop mic input jacks are NOT stereo and the cheapie USB adapter probably does NOT have a stereo mic input jack either. So you are getting only the right or left channel input. That's true on my Toshiba laptop.

You need to have a USB sound device that offers stereo input.

the description of this usb adapter is this 2.0-3.0D AUDIO SOUND CARD ADAPTER VIRTUAL 5.1 CH, i bought this because i havn,t got a line in on my laptop only the mic and headphone input, and i cannot get it to work at all even when i fiddle about with the sound controls ie audio mix, mic, and line in.but this adapter works great except for the problem as stated.
