recording onto a DVD disk

I remember when VCRs would allow a person to record a live TV show onto a VCR disk. I have a DVD player right now in which I could play store-bought pre-recorded disks on my DVD player. Is there any machine or device that I could buy that would enable me to directly record a live TV show onto a DVD disk? Thank you very much. user470
