USB 2.0 data rates are barely enough to keep up.
Many HDDs can pause for a thermal recal (google that) so you may need to compensate with a boat load of RAM or changing to another HDD.
All this is well discussed so I'll be short.

Hello there,
I am successfully recording DirecTV HD DVR programs to my PC, and I'm doing it pretty cheap. This method does have one flaw and I was hoping someone out there could help.
My Method:
I do not know the exact model of my DirecTV HD DVR, but I have connected component cables to the back, which are then connected to a USB 2.0 "Diamond HD Game Capture" device. I do not use the recording software that came with this because the software is horrible. I am using Windows Media Encoder 9 to encode the video files.
On my DVR I simply play the recorded show and then start encoding on my PC. When the show is over the file is ready to play.
The problem:
At random intervals the encoding seems to glitch out. It will be perfectly fine and then suddenly the video will pause for a few seconds and audio will continue. After the glitch occurs it goes back to being normal again. This isn't too bad and I can still record and watch the shows, but I'd like to know why this glitch occurs. Any ideas?
