Record one channel, watch another?

Dec 5, 2004 6:18AM PST

Just got an Hdtv DLP TV, subscribed to digital cable and had the HDTV cable box installed. It was the cable guy's first day on the job, and I actually set up most of the connections myself because he was clueless. My cable company refuses to attach the cables to anything but the TV, and will not answer questions about connecting to a VCR. I want to be able to watch one station and record another, as I have been doing for years with the old setup. I have a Samsung TV with DVI connections. My DVD player is hooked up thru a HDMI connection. The cable box is a Motorola DCT6200 with component and DVI connections. Can anyone explain this to me, or refer me to someplace where I can get some info? Thanks!

My guess....

Have you try using a spltter (before the cable box connection)? You will be only getting the regular channels; you will no be able to get HD. channels. HD. channel needs the box. That's what I think.

The DCT6200 comes with two tuners in it, which allows you to watch one program while you are recording another. I have the set top box from Comcast, and the remote they gave me has a button on the bottom left corner called "SWAP" that allows you to switch between the two tuners. You can record a program on ESPN for example on one tuner, then hit the SWAP buton and watch another program while ESPN is recording in the background.

Hope that works for you...

response to recording while watching

first, take the wire going from the cable box to the tv and unplug it from the tv. take it and plug it into the "in" jack on the vcr. (you're going to need another coaxial cable if you have one.) with the 2nd coaxial cable, plug one end into the "out" jack of the vcr, and the other into the tv. now, that solves the problem of using the vcr, cable, and tv together. hopefully you already know how to record with the vcr and watch another program. but as long as all this is hooked up, you'll be alright.

P.S.-
thats really lousy on the part of the cable company to not help you. i can understand not wanting to hook up anything else to the cable, but they should at least help a little.

hope this helps
