record directly to external HD from camcorder?

I am guessing it is not currently available because the camcorder companies want to be able to charge more for their cameras, but I would love to be able to record directly from a harddrive camcorder to an external harddrive. That would mean that you are unlimited as to how much recording time you can get without going back to a computer to upload your video.

The others have already

pointed your to existing technology.

I wanted to clarify your statement: "you are unlimited as to how much recording time you can get without going back to a computer to upload your video"... Hard drives fill, too. Using your words, any removable media allows for "unlimited"... flash memory and miniDV tape already exist.

In a sense of an external hard drive...

They too are "removable" considering you can unplug the full one and replace it with a fresh one.
