Question

Recommendation on digital camera for action/children pics?

Aug 17, 2011 1:13PM PDT

Like most parents, I take a MILLION pics of my children and want to get a camera that can take GOOD pics that won't cost me an arm & a leg. I'm CONSTANTLY taking pics and video, but would like a camera that can get some of their "action" photos.

I have a Casio Exilim, which I NOW know isn't the best, but has served its purpose, but I'd like a little more now.

Any suggestions. I KNOW I may be pushing it now.. but is there anything out there for under $300?

Action/children

If you want to take pictures in low light without flash, you will be disappointed with any small camera under $400.
None of those $400 - $500 cameras that I am talking about have an optical zoom of much over 3X.

There are no small cameras with higher zooms that will work well in low light without flash.

So you are looking for a small camera with a good flash.
When using flash, all cameras will have to wait a few seconds between shots so that the flash can recharge.
That means the shot to shot time with flash will be several seconds.
That is probably the thing you dislike about your present camera.
Casio cameras seem to have the best shot to shot times with flash.

I suggest you try any camera you find interesting because it may not perform as well as the one you already have.

Action + Small Camera = Outside Only

As previously mentioned, compact cameras with small sensors will not work any better than your current camera when it comes to shooting action photos indoors. They will be adequate for outdoor use though; you can find pocketable models with 10x or more zoom lenses, and many of them now have burst modes to capture 10 or so images within a second. Have a look at the Canon SX230 HS, the Nikon S9100, and the Sony HX9V.
