Recommendation for quality amplifier for Samsung LED

We have a Samsung LED TV UN55B6000 with a Samsung BlueRay disk player BD-P1600. The picture is fabulous, but the sound quality is not as good as we wish. We want to hook up a 5.1 sound system to it. We have the analog speakers, but....

1) can you recommend a quality amp (under $1,000) that will work with this TV?
2) How do I connect it up to this TV?
3) Since we have DirectTV, can I then program my DirectTV remote to control the sound level?
4) If so, can I mute the sound on the TV while I use the 5.1 external speakers?

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Best wishes, Dee

duncanmk,

What you may want to consider is a receiver that has several (2 or more) optical audio inputs for your different surround sound peripherals. The TV will not send 5.1 through the TV, so consider a receiver that has one for your Blu-Ray, one for your DirecTV, and maybe another for your TV audio.

Samsung does have a pretty wide selection, and those can be found here:

There's even a feature seeker options and a price range slide scaler that might help you choose one that's right for you.

Does that help?

Thanks so much. Yes, that does help. However the link you gave me was to the Samsung home entertainment section. I already have my 5 speakers (for 5.1 system) so what I need is a receiver along the lines you suggest to handle 1) our DirectTV box, 2) my BlueRay player, and 3) possibly the TV sound (so I could turn it off and on if I wished to use only that source.) Also is there a way to connect up an i-pod or iphone?

Can you recommend several receivers to consider?

Thanks again,
Duncan

duncanmk,

Here is one of our stand-alone receivers:

Or:

As far as the iPod/iPhones, some docks worth with some players, and depending on the update, they may or may not work, and that's partly due to DRM issues put on their by the other manufacturers. However, the 3.5mm heaphone to RCA jack is always an option for any mp3 player, and provides the same quality.
