Recent Vista Update Overhauled My Desktop and More

Aug 9, 2007 2:40PM PDT

Microsoft seems determined to make me hate Vista ... And their efforts are succeeding. After their most recent update of August 9th (see details in Note below), I have two new problems: (1) Vista completely reorganized all my desktop icons and (2) my System Tray is presenting me with the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon and the devices it's offering to remove are my two internal hard drives and my DVD drive.

Has anyone seen these two problems? I have a Dell E521 running Vista Home Premium with Aero turned off and using the Windows Classic display mode.

Thanks, all.

NOTE: The three updates that were installed on August 9th are two updates for the NVIDIA nForce Serial ATA Controller and the NVIDIA driver update for the GeForce 6150 LE.

P.S.: If this big Vista "fix pack" update we're expecting (from KB938194 and KB938979) doesn't fix things, I don't think I'll be waiting for the Vista service pack in the Fall. I guess I'll be blowing the dust off my UNIX books again. I'm being as kind as can be expected, but Vista is just one big disappointment after another, in my view.

Who is running your computer?

Who is running your computer? You or Microsoft?

Take charge of your computer, turn updates off or if you do turn them on choose which ones you want.

Now, take charge, do a system restore to before they installed the updates and turn "Big Brother" OFF.

Vista Fails Yet Again ... Par for the Course, I Guess
Aug 10, 2007 2:12PM PDT

James ... Considering that I installed no other software in recent weeks, I felt confident that rolling back prior to the update would fix it just as you suggested. I didn't expect my Desktop to be restored to its original appearance, but I DID expect the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon to stop offering to remove my internal hard drives and DVD.

The Restore completed successfully, but neither problem was fixed. This is par for the course with Vista, I feel. I'm not entirely surprised, but I am more disappointed in Vista.

Thanks, though, James. Ubuntu, here I come.

Just installed those two fixes and...

My internet speed (download and upload) has decreased dramatically. I'm starting to think I made a bad decision. I used to get about 140kbps download and 60kbps upload; now it's about 20kbps download and 5kbps upload. Already checked with ATT and they say everything is fine on their end. I have the last router and modem firmware so it seems Vista itself was the culprit. Any idea of how to remove the updates?
