recent problem connecting to wireless

Jan 10, 2008 8:48AM PST

I'm running a Macbook Pro with Leopard. I've had no problems connecting to our wireless network until this morning. Now I can't connect. In System Prefences -> Network, on the left side in the box Airport says "Not Connected", but on the right side on right side it says "Status: Connected" and then below that "Parallels Host-Guest is currently active and has the IP address xxxxxx". I do have Parallels on my computer so I can run Windows, but I'm not currently using it. On the left side in the box, the top entry is "Parallels - Host Guest" and the second entry is "Parallels NAT". The airport signal strength is good. It seems like part of my computer sees the airport fine and has authenticated things with my correct password, and another part doesn't see it. The little airport icon at the top shows a strong signal detected.

Any ideas how I can fix this and connect to the wireless network?

Thanks.

Eric

Is the Parallels application running

or is the window only closed? It seems that you connected to the internet under Windows and while the computer has authorized Windows to use internet, OS X hasn't. Wild guess but maybe. Open Parallels and disconnect any networks, then try reconnecting under OS X.

with a wired connection to the network.

Once that is established and running correctly, move onto the wireless side.

Parallels will appear in the side panel because it is installed on the computer, but not necessarily running.

more failed attempts to solve the problem

I reinstalled the Leopard operating system and tried to connect to the network via the network and had the same problem. I then got all the Mac updates and tried again - same problem. I then created a new user account and tried to connect to the airport from that account - same problem.

I think I need to return this computer.

So did you do as suggested?

Does the machine connect to your network using an ethernet cable and NOT wireless?

Does your side bar indicate a second ethernet adapter

The previous message said this:

I turned off the airport, plugged in a cable connection, restarted my computer, everything was connected just fine to the network, turned on the airport, disconnected the cable, and then I couldn't connect to the internet.

I ran this problem by the people in our IT department and they had a lot of suggestions, fiddled around with it for a long time, and then said that they had no idea what was wrong.
