Recent Documents coming from files in the network disappears

hi, can anyone give me an idea on why this is happening,

issue: user is opening a file (excel, pdf, word) located in the network drive, copy of the file will then be created in the Recent Documents, then user will close all the files and will try to re- open each files that were created on recent documents but while he opens each file, other files that were created will disappear in recent documents and will just have 1 or 2 files left.

They'll kick it up to Microsoft and my bet is there is something odd with this XP. Some patch not done or a setting about clearing recent documents.
