Receiver that supports 120hz refresh rate?

Oct 24, 2008 6:51AM PDT

I have a Samsung LN52A750 LCD television with 120hz refresh rate. Of course, the picture is phenomenal but that is not the point. I recently bought a Yamaha RX-V1800 receiver which could only pass the video signal through at 60hz. (This TV displays the signal resolution and refresh rate, so no guessing here.) The Yamaha product description said it would support 120hz refresh rate... it did not... I called Yamaha and they confirmed... it cannot. To those that think there isn't much difference... believe me, there is a substantial improvement between 60hz and 120hz even with the same resolution! Maybe the difference becomes more evident with larger screens, I don't know. I'm not a tech-head but I do know the difference between good and phenomenal!

So now, I am having trouble finding a receiver that can truly support this refresh rate. I already called Onkyo... they said, "sorry". Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My question is why your reciever has to support it?

120hz refresh rate is the function of the TV only (or am I wrong). It has nothing to do with the video going into the tv.

AFAIK that is correct

And when you think about it makes sense too on the point that 120Hz has nothing to do with bandwidth. That is, I would be concerned about the bandwidth of the receiver's HDMI switch (whether it can transfer full-res Blu-Ray and lossless audio, for instance), but again that shouldn't have any bearing on the refresh rate on the display.

You Are Correct!!!!

The 120hz refresh rate is done by the HDTV and has nothing to do with the video that is supplied to it. John

Ditto. Your TV tuner is providing the video. You are

using a receiver to amplify & route audio only to exterior speakers. Maybe we are technologically backwards about passing through codecs, but the problem escapes me. So, I too, am in the dark about 120 hz refresh rate.
