Hi there:
You didn't say what your budget was, but I can recommend a few options for you to check out:
Onkyo TXSR-876
Denon AVR 2809CI
Pioneer Elite SC-07
My considerations were similar to yours in some way and my research brought me to these receivers - priced between $1000-$1500 - as my down-selected set. All have multi-room/multi-zone capabilities. You can research these online/in-store and see what features will work the best for you.
I ended up getting the Onkyo because it's the only one with HQV Reon video processing and is also THX Ultra2 certified , ensuring both excellent picture AND sound processing. All are great, though, and should provide you with what you're looking for once you decide.
BTW, the Pioneer is the newest and has some cool features like direct connection with your iPod without an accessory dock. And if you want network connectivity, I think the Pioneeer already has that, but you'll to step up to the Onkyo TXNR-909 and Denon 3808CI. Newer models are expected for the latter two anytime, so you might get some bargains on those.
Hope this helps - good luck.

I am putting in an entertainment room for my family. I have speakers pre wired as follows. 2 fronts, one center, 2 sorround and 2 in the ceiling for what I thought one day might be 7.1 I also have two volume controls installed for outdoor speakers.
For now anyway, I don't plan to hook up the ceiling speakers as it seems it's not worth the benefit. I listen to music more than watch movies (wish I could say that about my teenage boys). I have paradigm speakers (surround sound) speakers and I've also installed speaker wire for 4 outdoor speakers (which I am also looking for advice on what type to buy). So, I know I need a dual zone receiver. I believe I can run all outsoor speakers thru one zone although I assume (?) I will have to double up the outdoor speakers? One set to one volume control and the other to the second. What about in the back of the receive. Do you two in one and two in another? The receover I need will need to run a 63 inch plama (good video processing needed); a PS3 which will act as a blue ray and I need something I can hook up my "I touch" too.
Did I forget I pre-wired everything into a closest so I guess I need an infrared remote (Harmony has been suggested).
OK - so by now you've figured out, this guy knows enough to be dangerous and I'll admit this (almost) 50 yr. old Dad is trying to be cool and hook his buys (and yes himself) up with a decent system.
Hope I didn't bore you. Thanks for any advice you can give on any of the above.
