General discussion

receiver for listening to music rather than HT

Dec 12, 2004 9:32AM PST

What receivers are intended for music rather than DVD's HT? Do you need 5.1, 6.1, etc for music? What receivers are good/excellent for music?

While there are many good music only receivers, I've always been a DENON fan.

If you want just pure stereo sound, go with an Onkyo. Their base models, the TX-8011 and TX-8211 runn about $200, sometimes cheaper and almost flawlessly run bookshelf speakers to decent sized floor speakers. For a little more power and about $100 more than the 8011 and 8211, try the 8511. This has almost twice the power of the previously mentioned two. I have been an Onkyo fan for quite a while due to the simple controls, comparatively high power and low price.

I like Denon

I'm not sure if any HT receivers are intended for music.

So far, I've owned a couple of older ProLogic Sonys (higher end models), a couple of Yamahas (595a and 995), a Denon 3802 (main HT) and a Panasonic XR25 (2nd HT). I liked the Yamahas for HT and they were OK for music, the Panasonic is very good for both, but a little thin/edgy for my tastes on music, and the Denon is the one I'd keep if I had to downsize. It sounds a little restrained for HT compared to my Yamaha 995, but sounds very good for a receiver when dealing with music. If I wanted to improve on it, I'd likely go for the integrated Rotel or Rotel separates or Anthem seperates.
