rebooting in safe mode

I tried rebooting in safe mode on VISTA Home Prem. Inspiron. I wanted to do a system repair. the message pop up required password, but don't remember setting one up when first purchased the computer. I pulled up properties and the only thing that showed was computer name and full computer name. last name was indicated in both places. If there wasn't a password set up how would I get one for future use in working from safe mode? Thank you so much. Computers can make a person go crazy, but there is something about not wanting to give up. For the sake of learning.

When asked for the password, did you try to just press "enter"? I know that with XP Home the same will happen and, if no administrator password has been set up, you don't need one.

They won't be answered in the best case and most likely will be deleted if they are very off-topic, like this one. Starting with a few deletions now.
