Resolved Question

Reboot after driver install

Sep 19, 2011 3:45PM PDT

<span id="INSERTION_MARKER"> <span id="INSERTION_MARKER"> Hello, the sound on my PC has not been working and every time I try to install a new driver, my computer instantly restarts before the setup is complete. I attempted to install the driver from safe mode and the setup completed and I got a message it was successful. However, windows then attempts to start and then restarts before it gets past the windows screen and I have to choose the "last good configuration" option and then I'm back at square one with no driver and no sound. To the best of my knowledge I have the correct driver, but I cant be positive. In the device manager, there is yellow mark next to multimedia audio controller. I tried to include all the necessary info below, please let me know if you need to know anything else. I really appreciate the help, this has been driving me crazy. <span>

<span>HP Pavilion 742c
<span>Windows XP Pro SP3
<span>Intel Pentium 4 CPU 2.00GHz

<span>(Audio Details from PC Wizard)
<span> Intel Analog device AD1981A
<span>Trigem Computer 82801DB/DBL/DBM(ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH-M)
<span> AC'97 Audio Controller

Just guesses here.

Where did you get this driver from? Many users try updating drivers through Microsoft, but they don't do drivers very well. It would be better to get the driver either direct from HP or from the card manufacturer.

You say the Device Manager shows a yellow exclamation mark. If you right click that entry and select Properties, what messages if any do you see?

Has the sound card failed? If so no drivers are going to help that.

Mark.

This driver came directly from Realtek's website, the link is below. However, If I search for a driver with the Intel id number "AD1981zaA" I get a different driver from Intel's site, the link to that is also below. This gives me the driver "wdm3516b_cadenza". I checked HP's site, including the link you gave me, and they don't have anything there for audio.

One more try?

Head to HP.COM, click on the chat button/link and ASK where this driver is to found. Sometimes HP has it squirreled away on a HP FTP server (see http://forums.cnet.com/7726-7587_102-2699006.html as an example of where the drivers were not on the web pages.)

Maybe a new sound card would be best if you lost the restore media.

Previously,
I only clicked uninstall driver in the device manager. I just uninstalled the
AC 97 from the Add/Remove programs list. I ran the WDM_A406 AC 97 driver again
and this time it completed successfully and 'ASK'ed to reboot the computer to
finish the setup. However, when the system boots up, I get a message that says
"please insert the Compact Disk labeled 'Realtek AC97 Audio Driver Disk'
into your CD-ROM drive and click ok." and still no sound. Also, this
driver came directly from Realtek's website, the link is below. However, If I
search for a driver with the Intel id number "AD1981zaA" I get a
different driver from Intel's site, the link to that is also below. This gives
me the driver "wdm3516b_cadenza". I checked HP's site and they don't
have anything there for audio. In device manager, under the Multimedia Audio
Controller with the yellow mark, the properties menu under device status, it
says "this device is not configured correctly. (Code 1) To reinstall the
drivers for this device, click Reinstall Driver." If I click reinstall
driver, it runs the hardware update wizard and before it finishes it gives me a
popup window saying "please insert the Compact Disk labeled 'Realtek
AC97 Audio Driver Disk and click ok" just like I mentioned before.

I think
my computer has a chip set and not a card, I can't say for sure, but I have no
way of knowing if it has failed. Is there a way to tell?
