Plasma's are best for Home Theatre Movie experence.
LCD's are best for Sports an news shows to give you that punch. But LCD's have motion flow issues with sports and Plasma's do not.
I say tomato and you say tomato.
So, you are ready to buy your first HDTV, or you want to upgrade from an older set.
Here are my reasons for choosing Plasma over LCD at 42"+ screen sizes.
For the ultimate home theatre viewing experience, Plasma has LCD beat by a mile.
1. You will be paying much less for a Plasma at the same screen size compared to an LCD.
2. Viewing angles on Plasma's are great no matter where you sit, which is very important in a home theatre setting.
LCD's picture quality will always wash out whenever you are not sitting dead straight on from the display. Washed out blacks hurt the picture quality considerably.
3. The #1 most important factor in PQ are deep blacks, in this regard Plasma's are superior to LCD's.
Though, LCD's have come a long way, but unless you can afford the premium for a LED Back-lit LCD, you are not going to be able to match Plasma black levels.
4. Plasma displays tend to be smoother with fast motion images.
5. Try finding a 58" LCD that costs the same as a 58" Plasma with the same picture quality.
Cons of Plasma displays
1. Reflects more light than matte coated LCD's, but some Plasma displays have great anti-reflective screens.
2. Energy Hogs.
3. Plasma displays have more issues with color accuracy than some LCD's, especially being able to produce accurate greens, but the higher end models these days tend to not have this problem.
4. In extreme cases might be susceptible to burn-in. Though, this problem has almost vanished.
