Question

Reading Cnet Reviews

When reading Cnet Download SW product descriptions by Editor and Publisher I have always been able to use the "read more" button until recently. I use Firefox with Private Browsing and Tracking protection but I am sure that I was able to read descriptions with these features previously. I am not aware of any changes that would stop me from being able to read Cnet info on a product. Any advice would be helpful.

I wonder if the Private Browsing and Tracking protection breaks this. Did you try it with a normal browser without that?

Re: description

I tried in a totally fresh Firefox 56.0.3, normal mode (not private mode), no addons at all. I visited http://download.cnet.com/Google-Chrome-64-bit/3000-2356_4-76171414.html with a curious result. There's IS a read more button, but only for a few seconds. To see it you need to page-down very fast, and then you see it for a second or so before it disappears.
I might be related to a recent change in the CNET software, and I suppose it's unintended.

O, and there is that awful autoplay video on the top of the page. Luckily Firefox has the possibility to set autoplay off.

Answer
Hello Salartech.

We apologize for any confusion here. At a glance, it looks like this is happening in all browsers, but only on product pages that (a) do not have an official Editors' Review and (b) have a fairly short publisher description.

On pages that do have Editors' reviews, and/or longer publisher descriptions, you should still see the "read more +" link after the page loads. Here are a couple examples of pages where you should still see that link and be able to click it to expand review and description sections:

http://download.cnet.com/Tor-Browser-Bundle/3000-2356_4-75660251.html

http://download.cnet.com/Google-Chrome/3000-2356_4-10881381.html

However, please let us know if you don't see the "read more +" link on those pages either.

Jen

Hi Jen

Take a look at Kees post above. I can reproduce as well:
http://download.cnet.com/Google-Chrome-64-bit/3000-2356_4-76171414.html

Under the Publisher's Description, the "read more+" shows up for a couple of seconds while the page is loading but then disappears. I think the intention is not to display it, but it does shows up briefly while the page is loading which is probably what the OPs is referring to. May need developer to tweak it to make sure it doesn't show up at all during page load.

Thanks!
