re: software updates

Oct 24, 2007 1:03AM PDT

Checking "software updates" , first there was one for iTunes. I downloaded it, but "install remained grayed out. So I figured it was for the 08 version.

I get prompts from other iLife programs when I open them that say the new version for 08 is available. I am assuming that means to buy iLife 08 (?)

Then I have this one: iMac EFI Firmware 1.2

"This update improves the performance and reliability of Intel Core 2 Duo processors and fixes issues with Boot Camp for iMac computers.
After the firmware is successfully applied to your computer, your BootROM Version will be one of the following:?IM51.0090.B09?IM52.0090.B09?IM61.0093.B07
You can confirm the version of the BootROM installed on your computer using System Profiler.
To complete the firmware update process, please follow the instructions in the updater application (/Applications/Utilities/iMac EFI Firmware Update.app). The updater will launch automatically when the Installer closes."

My version: Boot ROM Version: IM51.0090.B08

I will never use BootCamp. Is it necessary I download this ?

Thank you.

Software Updates.

If there is something in the software updates list then it would be just as well to go ahead and install it.

The iMac EFI Firmware 1.2 should be installed. Note that it says "improves the performance and reliability of Intel Core 2 Duo processors". The bit about Boot Camp is an extra.

iTunes, while still part of iLife, is not locked into the purchasing cycle in the same way that iPhoto, iMovie, etc. are.
iTunes is a free application that gets updated regularly.

Run Software update again and choose to Install, not Download, and follow the instructions for the Firmware updater. It's a little different!.

Bottom line, the software updater only shows updates that are relevant to your machine. Install them all.

Done! Firmware....

..... on 1st try. Happy

iTunes has not shown up again after the time I tried. I'll wait for next time.

Now I know to install the updates. But not the ones that offer "an update is available " pop-ups in different programs.

Thank you so much!

Sometimes the "an update is available" is a good thing. Not so much with iLife but with other programs like Firefox, MS Office(if installed), Adobe Reader and quite a few others.

You may be surprised at the number of programs that phone home to check for updates!

Enjoy
