General discussion

Re numbering individual pictures.

Aug 4, 2005 5:28PM PDT

Like many others I use Picassa to find my pics, but every time I download from my camera the picture file numbers are the same ie. DGS001 and up, although I store them in different folders, I can't combine them into one because of this. Is there a simple way of renaming blocks of pictures, my biggest block is about 500 (taken on one of our holidays).

Hope you can help.

files names from digital camera

I am not sure what brand of digital camera you are using. My camera (Olympus C-700) numbers the files with the date incorporated in number, such that pictures taken on two different days will be different. If the date is not set up on starting to use the camera, file names will be the same on successive days. Check with your owner's manual.

In Windows, you can do the following;

Select all the photos you want to rename.

Right click the first one to get a pop up menu.

Pick rename from the menu

Give it the desired name. I suggest giving the first one a name and number such as beachshot(1). Press enter. Windows will rename them all as beachshot(2), beachshot(3), beachshot(4), etc. If you just call the first one beachshot, Windows will rename the remainder as beachshot(1), beachshot(2), beachshot(3), etc.

That will at least allow you to group them by event.

Open a folder with files, click edit, select all files in one folder, click file and rename, hit enter. All files will be that name with sequential numbers. Open another folder and do the same with another name and so on. All files can then be collected into one folder or whatever.
