In the SYSTEM CONFIGURATION UTILITY, in the start up programs section, is there a way to remove the unwanted ones from there for good? for example: PRXTECT, and WEATHERCAST and REOE, and TALVTOO and there are lots lots more that are not wanted? How do they get there in the first place?

Start - run - regedit
Browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\shared tools\msconfig
Search through the folders there and delete what you no longer want in your startup.

when i attempted to follow the path that you advised to the folders, under the "shared tools" i'm not showing a folder called "msconfig". here is a list of the folders that ARE under shared....
CDR
GIF
GRAPHICS FILTER
HTML
JPEG
MSINFO
PANOSE
REG WIZARD
PWV1
STATIONARY
T2EMBED
T2EMBED.DLL
TEXT CONVERTER

I'm not sure what to do from there since there is no MSCONFIG folder.

Sorry, been a while since I used ME.

Browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\

From there, go into the RUN folder and delete unwanted entries from there.
