re:iPhoto

Dec 3, 2005 12:39AM PST

Recently, I've been having trouble importing images to iPhoto from other than a camera (I haven't tried that yet). The program crashes after the import and when it is reopened, the photos aren't in the library, even though they show up in the library immediatedly following the import.

I have a G3 ibook, 640 RAM, 800 Mhz, 30 GB HD, OS 10.2.8
and still have 11 GB available.

Is it time to run First Aid or Disc warrior again? Thanks

Quit i-Photo, and then try throwing away the i-Photo Prefs file, When you open i-photo back up, it will make a new one.

Probably the problem.

Your_name is the name of your Home directory

didn't work

Well, I did what you asked: Mac HD/users/library/preferences/

There was no iPhoto folder but there was something called com.apple.iPhoto.lplist so I trashed this, opened iPhoto and tried the import from my shared folder and it crashed again.

There is an iPhoto folder under iApps which revealed AlbumData.xml. I'm going to assume this is nothing, right?

Long story short, still at square1.

Do not delete that

It contains the key to all the pictures in your iPhoto.
I don't recall you mentioning what version of iPhoto you were running.

An upgrade to the next version "may" solve your problem

version

1.1.1

Which version is the latest?
And where do I find it?

BTW, that thing I deleted returned after I reopened iPhoto.

Latest version of iPhoto
Dec 5, 2005 11:35PM PST

is version 5
You will find it at the Apple store or in your favorite Mail Order Catalog.
It now comes with a Bundle called iLife 05 which includes iPhoto, iMovie, iTunes and iDVD.
It can be had for $79.00 or less.
You may be able to find older versions of iLife, 04 for instance, that will work well with your machine and will probably be cheaper.

Tiger

If I got Tiger, wouldn't it be bundled it that. On another matter, I've been considering buying a flash memory stick. I don;t know much about them. Is one just as good as another...do the same memory sticks work on both the PC and Mac ?

iLife

is not bundled with Tiger. It is a separate package.

Flash memory sticks are about equal. They work on Macs and PC's without any change in the formatting.
They are formatted as FAT which allows almost any OS to read it.

On the Mac, no other software is required. PC's sometimes require software depending on the version of Windows being used

So bact to...
Dec 8, 2005 10:07PM PST

the original question. Why is the iPhoto crashing after I try importing a file? Is there a reputable free photo program for the Mac if something is wrong with iPhoto? Would Disc Warrior help?
Would taking a pix of my dog for the hundreth time and importing that be a good idea?

iPhoto

Try deleting the iPhoto preferences.
Disk Warrior can't hurt it
Run Repair Permissions.
Reinstall OS X (Archive and Install)using the OX X installation disk. This will install a fresh copy of iPhoto on the drive and remove the old one.
If you only have the original iBook disks, check the documentation for installing WITHOUT erasing the Hard Drive.
Replace iPhoto with a newer version.
Throw iPhoto away and reinstall it from the Installation CD's
Check out eBay for a copy of iLife04 or iLife05
Check out eBay for OS 10.3
All ideas are good, some are just more gooderer than others.

Eureka!
Dec 11, 2005 10:03PM PST

I don't know why this worked but it did. I created a new folder on the desktop and moved ALL of the images from iPhoto and Shared into it. It was necessary to open all images in Preview and then Saved As to make the move. The Drag and Drop method didn't work. I then deleted all the images from iPhoto, closed and reopened, the imported all the images from the new folder back into iPhoto. No crash! AND, with the new folder, the images are saved and backed up. Dunno why this happened to start off with or why the remedy worked but I'll take it!
