Re-installed windows and there are problems

Mar 21, 2012 4:23AM PDT

Ok i have a major problem and need help straight away.

About 2 days a go, i got a few trojans and worms on my netbook...which runs on windows xp...after a long process of scanning with anti virus and many other methods, i eventually had to install a fresh copy of windows. i did that but there is no sound icon and when i try to go on volume controller it tells me

there are no active mixer devices avalible ........this program will now close

i have no idea what kind of software and hardware is installed on my netbook as it was bought second hand so it already had the system running...WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO DO??

i have tried mainly all options of the internet ...and am srewed now ...so plz any help will be appriciated and if you need any more information feel free to ask ....

also when i go to device manager, there are a lot of unknown devices and i have downloaded drivertool/boost software which tells me i have 7 devices without drivers ....but i cant afford the software to know what they are

i am an intermediate user of computers so i know what software is installed using the add and remove programs and device manager but im not good enough to make my netbook work...

Drivers
Mar 21, 2012 4:30AM PDT

This sounds like, (no pun intended), a lack of drivers for the hardware.

Tell us more about this fresh install; how did you do it, and what drivers did you install as well?

What make and model computer? That might be important as the make might have all the necessary drivers this model notebook needs to function properly.

Whatever you do, do not use so-called "driver utility" software or "optimizers". They can do more damage than good.

yes i think it is that,

its an rm notebook pc...the model number is U5F

Just to confirm, did letting your system search for drivers online not work? Right Click on my computer -> properties -> hardware -> device manager -> sound, video and game controllers.
ok i tried to do that, all the hardware is upto date but i its the one in the unknown category that is what i need to update and to do that i need to know what they are .....this is the list....its in a yellow question mark in with yellow exclamation mark ....

Base system device x3
ethernet conroller
PCI device
unknown device
USB device
video controller
video controller (VGA compatible) (THIS IS SOMEONE ELSE'S RECOMENDATION)

Re: drivers

The average maker on his support pages has the option to download manuals and drivers. This clearly is a well below averager maker, because he doesn't offer such. So all you can do: contact their support and ask for the drivers. They might have a driver CD, or a rather secret place to download them. Or - if you're out of luck - they don't have them any more. Then all you have is a non-functional laptop.
Maybe the previous owner forgot to give you the driver CD. In that case, ask him for it.

I have one question.

Why not get the drivers from the maker of the machine?

Folk here have been known to find drivers at the maker's site for free.
