? re: AVG Update Files

When updating AVG, I know that the downloaded file goes into the Update folder. Is it necessary to keep all those definitions files on PC?

I know to keep the avg6info.cft file. Somewhere on this forum I got the idea some time ago that it was not necessary to keep ALL the update files --- just keep the last 2 updates.

So, I've been doing that and deleting all others. A PC club buddy recently told me I should be keeping ALL update FILES as without all the old ones AVG might miss something and I could easily get a virus.

I've been deleting these files for a long time and thus far maybe I've been lucky. Right now, I have the last 7 updates and had planned to delete all but the last 2, but after my recent discussion, I wonder if I've been taking too many chances and should be leaving these files well enough alone!!

What do you suggest please?

Thanks - Julea

Julea,

my advice, keep them all.

consider the miniscule amount of H/D space they occupy.

You should keep some...

but you can always download them again if required. I like to keep everything required for a reinstall on my PC (backed up to CD). For AVG, it would be the original installation file, the #516 update, occasionnally the current update for applying to #516 and the last differential file or two. In reality, I have more than that because I'm not too diligent in cleaning up the update folder(the new differential files are very small as David pointed out).

Julea,

as the virus definitions are so small, I keep them all.

It is important that you keep the update 516 - as from there on the smaller virus definitions started.
