re-associating DATs to their correct file type

Aug 16, 2010 9:36AM PDT

A little while back I downloaded and installed a file shredder but it made the contents of the Recycle Bin invisible. It didn't bother me at first but now it does. I tried to uninstall it but unfortunately, the uninstaller doesn't work. A message says that the DAT format is not recognised. I looked in File Types and found that DAT files were associated to Media Player Classic. Could anyone advise me on how to re-associate DAT files to whatever they should be so I can uninstall this application?

DAT generally is short for "data", and there's no unique program to associate it with. All I can suggest to get rid of this application: system restore to before a little while back.

DAT file

Ok, I've cured this by updating the software which repaired the uninstall DAT file and I was then able to remove it.

Thanks for your info.

Good job. Thanks for telling.

File associations only are relevant when opening the file by double clicking on it in Windows Explorer or My Computer. And that wasn't an issue here. The real problem was a corrupted dat-file.

I answered your question. But it was the wrong question, so it was a wrong answer. Can happen. Good you found the solution yourself.
