so did you guys ever find a RAZR driver that is shareware?
Can anyone tell me it the Motorola Phone Tools can configure the R3 to charge from a USB port. If not, are there other approaches to charging from the USB?

Hi,
I am very curious how the driver tools work.
Thanks - now charging using the PC usb is working.
But grateful to anyone who can tell me how this works - ie what happens when we use the driver, that makes the charging work now.
We know by default the USB does not charge the motorola razr v3. There are two ways it gets charged
1. install the driver on PC and use the USB and any standard USB A to mini-USB cable to charge.
2. using the AC/DC charger supplied with the phone (with a mini-USB which could be proprietary at the charging end).
3. I bought a cable from McKal (USB A to mini-USB) that claims it can charge the motorola razr v3 using any USB 5V, and without needing a driver. It also works.
It seems the motorola razr v3 charging cable has proprietary pin-outs that uses the pin between pin 3 and pin 4 (labelled as pin X). I am unable to verify these pinouts but there are two sites which posts information on this.
http://krhainos.tk/motoplug.jpg has a diagram of the wiring.
http://pinouts.ru/CellularPhones-A-/razrv3_charger_pinout.shtml has some discussions on the hardware type of solution
How does one reconcile between method 1 and method 2 or 3 as in method 1, using a normal USB A to mini-USB cable obviously does not make use of pin X (which is No Connection).
I am puzzled by this. Does method 1 above issue some commands to the phone?
Brgds.
Romilla thank you so much for posting this. This is exactly what I needed to charge my phone from my laptop. I used a mini usb that I already had and this driver and it worked like a charm.
Hey, not sure if anyone has answered the last question for you about the dust specks in the screen. My husband just had his replaced due to the dust particles. We initially thought it to be a insurance claim, but upon further discussion with nextel, it appears that the first batch of razr's that came out had this problem, so if you want to replace it call them up. I actually initially went through my phone carrier and then they sent me to the nextel...good luck
i just bought a razr v3 off ebay and im having some problems with it. when i bought it the battery was compleatly dead and it didnt come with a charger so i bought a car charger for it and it doesnt seem to want to charge the only thing that happens is the keypad flashs. what does that mean? do i need a new battery or a charger that just charges the battery itself? please help
i love it it is ten times skinnier than the razr v3 has bluetooh can hold 50,000 songs and has transflash card that can hold 67 mb of anything, even pics, apps, vids, and more. the screen displays beautifually at 9999,9999k resulution!! outside is tainless steel, has integrated wi-fi, can open either in swivel or flip, and has a video camera, also stereo speakers and touchscreen, comes in one color transparent white, so cool, it even glows at night!! sorry when it is realeased is confidential
You might want to check this out for the pin out of the mini USB connector on this phone. Apparently it is proprietary - gosh now who would of guessed why they would make it proprietary? To sell more cables? Naw not Motorola!!!!!! What ever happened to standard open architecture specs?
Yes it is frustrating. The V3 charging via mini-USB expect proprietary pinouts on the mini-USB side. Read my posting number 13.
Or this is the wiring diagram. Don't think it is wise to construct the cable on our own.

Safer to buy a cable costing about US$8.00 from McKal from most IT Stores.
In Asia, you probably can find an imitation China-made cable for about US$2.00 to US$4.00 depeding on which country and it will work with any USB 5.0V of any computer - with or without Motorola phone tools. It will also work with any USB travel charger or Car cigarette lighter charger as long as it is 5.0V and can drive a current of around 250mA.
make sure u charger is good and not cheap one. Go to store and see if u phone will start charging on their original equipment. It worked for me.
Install the usb driver from the link below and you can charge your V3 with standard cable:

I'm using the Sony Clie usb cable to charge my V3 now.
all you need is to download the software that will enable your razor to charge, you can find that for free in the Motorola website.
since he asked for them in November 2005
Cheers,
Rick
I think it's a load of BS that you have to pay #30 for a program just so you can charge your phone through a USB port. I'm never going Motorola agin, it's such a rip-off ...
I recently got a 2nd hand Razr.
I plug it into my computer with a mini-usb cable and it still wont turn on.
I've read that the phone must be on to charge from USB, but if the battery is dead how can I turn the phone on? Does USB also act as the power supply when its plugged in?
For instance: Can you plug a phone into USB with no battery and have it turn on?
Im trying to decide if this phone is defective.
Thanks!
Since you are trying to decide if the phone is dead or not, before you spend any money, I suggest you try the instructions in post #25.

I returned my less-than-one month old V3 to Cellular Choices today as the charger that came with the phone failed to charge batteries.
I can access the files in my V3xx by using a mini usb to usb cable and plugging it into vista but it will not charge without the drivers.
To charge the V3xx via PC usb port you need these first and the phone should be turned on. Also you sould be plugged directly into the PC and not though a USB hub or keyboard. The PC connections should be "root hubs" and supply .5 amp while passive usb hubs and keyboards only typically allow .1 amps.

I found an old version of Phone tools for $4 online. It upgrades to the current version. It takes a while since it upgrades through each old version first.I had to do 5 or 6 upgrades to get it to the newest version.Beats paying motorola $30-$40 for something that should be free. They should learn from Nokia.
We can charge Razr V3 cell phone with +5V power supply/Solar panel/PC USB port with out any software. In USB pin-1 is the +5V, 2&3 communication pins and 4 is the Gnd.
You can cut the cable which is from wall charger (mains Charger)to cell phone and terminate audio jack-mail to phone side and female jack to wall charger side, solar panel side, USB side and +5V power supply output such that +ve to +ve and -ve to -side. Then you can plug in any one of the charger, For example in home wall charger, in the office PC USB, out side solar panel, in the electronics lab +5V power supply.
Enjoy with 4 chargers where you go !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hope it is clear
