Tainted Chinese wheat behind US pet poisonings: report

Tainted Chinese wheat?
Mar 23, 2007 4:40PM PDT

?had the rat poison on the product? That one I could believe!

What about other imported human food? Sooo Loong to eating Chinese ingredients that are imported for a while.

All this time the U.S. were concontrating on the manufacturers.
Now it becomes the sourse of the problems: Imported wheat.
Why do those two manufacturing plants purchase wheat from China when the U.S is the main wheat producer in the world? Same goes for rice.
Carolina rice. I love it.
Quaker Oats also here in the U.S.

International Multifoods in MN is the worlds biggest supplier of animal food in the world with everything from wheat and flour that we consume (under different consumer labels)? to goat food and rabbit food, just in case you had a goat or a sheep. BAAAAH!!

Thanks for the post, Glenda,

Tainted Chinese Wheat.
When is the US going to WAKE up & STOP importing from China?
Why don't we produce our OWN wheat??
DO you see what cutting corners does to all of us, and now effects our pets too??

I hope Menu foods pays for what it's done. Sold out to the outsourcing hype.

Yes...me! Why do we (the U.S.) import wheat?

And as for growing our own wheat, we have deforested our land so much that we don't have enough arable land left!~!!!!

LOL!
Apr 25, 2007 2:10AM PDT

I do believe all those wheat fields would HAVE to be deforested to grow wheat!

China exports poison for cash
Apr 24, 2007 5:04PM PDT

you think poisoned wheat gluten is a "mistake" as China states?
The Korean government discovered that China was injecting lead into their exported crabs, so they could charge more money for the extra weight. when the crab is boiled the lead dissipates into the crabmeat & is undetectable to the taste.
Basically China knows they are poisoning their customers, but they don't care as long as they get more profits.
I wonder what other food products they secretly "modify" in the name of profit?

I just remembered a news story...
Mar 23, 2007 9:42AM PDT

I just remembered a news story of at least 10 years ago. Basically, a farmer/rancher had cattle dying like flies on his farm. It turned out that he was feeding them seed wheat, meant for planting as opposed to feed wheat meant for consumption.
Seed wheat, and sometimes other plant seed stocks, can be coated with things like insecticides, fungicides, fertilizers and such that can be toxic to animals. These chemicals degrade in the soil when the seed grows, but can be a big time problem for any animal that consumes those coated seeds. If you have ever bought seeds in larger packs than the Wal-Mart home garden type packets you may have run into such not for direct consumption seeds. I have many times, but they were always labeled with a warning about eating them or feeding them to animals.

I didn't know that

I just thought seed was seedSad Thanks J

like insecticides, fungicides, fertilizers and such that can be toxic to animals.

Some time ago the Vet told my wife to buy dry cat food that does not have wheat. Wonder if they knew something back then. Course' that advice was part of the treatment for one cat having a sore on the lip, and maybe a react to 'wheat'.

J. Vega, True. And also corn seed or most other seed for planting and the packages do have warnings on them.
However, this is wheat grain for pet or human consumption that is tainted with rat poison.

My thought was...
Mar 25, 2007 3:43AM PDT

My thought was could it be possible that treated seed wheat could have gotten mixed up with some feed wheat.
The chemical in the recent case is sometimes used for rat poison, but it is also used for other purposes. An example is Coumadin brand of warfarin sodium, which is used for medical purposes as well as for the active ingredient of some rat/mouse poisons. As I have joked in past posts, I've won a bet that I would eat rat poison more than once when I was taking Coumadin.
But back to the case at hand. The question that now comes to my mind is do any Chinese companies that produce seed wheat ever use the chemical at hand in this case as an additive in their seed, as opposed to feeder, wheat products. If so, that would make a seed/feeder mixup a possibility.

Gosh, I'm sorry. I thought Menu Foods, the manufacturer and,

...supplier,from where all the poisoned pet foods came, was located at:

Menu Foods Income Fund
8 Falconer Drive
Streetsville, ON
Canada L5N 1B1

http://www.menufoods.com/recall/

I'll have to review my knowledge of geography.
I believe the "plants in Kansas and New Jersey" were recipients of the finished product from Menu Foods and those plants (Kansas & New Jersey) were simply redistributors.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Since I have a pet, I'm very much interested in this. But I only use Purina and did receive the following e-mail from them.

"We at Nestle Purina PetCare Company know the reports of pet food
recalls and withdrawals over the past week have been very
concerning and at times confusing for pet owners, who want to
ensure the safety of the food they are feeding their beloved pets.

We want to take this opportunity to reassure you that Mighty Dog
pouch products are the ONLY Purina(r) brand products affected by
Menu Foods' recall. Nestle Purina stands behind the high-quality
of our pet foods, and all Purina brand cat food products and all
other Purina brand dog food products, including Mighty Dog
canned products, can continue to be fed to your pets with
complete confidence.

On Friday, March 16, Nestle Purina PetCare issued its press
release announcing the voluntary withdrawal of our Mighty Dog(r)
brand pouch-packaged products that were produced by Menu Foods
from Dec. 3, 2006, through March 14, 2007. While we had no
indication of any product quality or safety issues specifically
related to our Mighty Dog pouch products at that time, we are
proactively withdrawing these products as a precautionary
measure, because the well-being of pets and the safety and
efficacy of our products are our top priorities.

Smuckers Brands are? Pillsbury (Gold Medal Flour),
Jiff Peanut Butter, Martha White, Hungry Jack, Bick?s Pickles from Canada, Crisco, Robin Hood Flour.
Also King Arthur Flour on a private label.

There are many private labels also. They do business with 54 countries. They also deal with pet food. Not listed that I viewed on the net, yet I know they make countless products because I did advertising with one of their divisions: MR DONUT.

I think that their product line is great and safe."With a name like Smucker's, who wouldn't trust them!??

Bottom line is this: I hope we can trust other brands for safe food.
Both Pets & Humans! Too bad what happened concerning this pet food scare. Better safe than sorry. Feed your pet dried food or human food.

Thanks for the "Heads-Up". It looks like...
Mar 24, 2007 4:33PM PDT

...Menu Foods maybe shipped good food to the Kansas and New Jersey plants and it became contaminated there. So I guess it all comes down to who finally packaged the food. I thought Menu Foods finally packaged the food and then sent it out to all their distributors...like shipped packaged pet food to Kansas and New Jersey. Do you have any information on the incremental steps in the process between Menu Foods and the "grocery stores"?

A Canadian company imported tainted wheat into the US. It is the responsibility of Menu Foods to make sure their product is safe, and they failed at that.

When the lawsuits fly, they will be the ones getting sued and will take the hit.
